A Message from the Principal

Greetings, Irving Families!

There is nothing better than seeing students excited about school and the possibilities for next school year. Course selection time is a fun time of year, where students really get to explore their interests and match those interests with the classes offered here and at the high school. To officially kick off course selection time, we had a full house last night at our Curriculum Night with overflowing sessions during the 7th grade information sessions. Wednesday, we welcomed our first set of rising 6th graders. They were greeted, after returning from their tour, by our band students, enjoyed an orchestra performance, and then heard one of my favorite songs, “In Summer” from our school musical Frozen performed by Noah W. We look forward to welcoming the rest of our rising 6th grade students to Irving on January 21 and 24.

Coming up in 8th grade Health and PE, around February 3 or 4, our Emotional and Social Health/Human Growth and Development lessons will begin. If you would like to opt your child out of these Family/Life Education (FLE) lessons, there are two ways to notify the school - you may use the Parent Digital Consent System (same login as ParentVue) and click on “Other Forms” and then select “Family Life Education” to follow the prompts to opt your child out or you may have your child return a copy of the opt-out forms found on the FCPS website.  As a reminder, if you would like to review the FLE curriculum, it is available on this website. If you have any questions about the curriculum, please reach out to your child’s Health and PE teacher.

Take Care!

Gradebook Available Until End-of-Quarter

Based on community feedback from the first quarter closure, FCPS revisited the scheduled dates for closing the Gradebook and Report Card modules in the SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE apps.

Moving forward, the app will close in alignment with the actual quarter-end dates. This change will allow students and families to view their assignments and grades until the last day of the quarter. Gradebook will be closed for the second quarter from Tuesday, January 28, 4 p.m. to Tuesday, February 4, 6 a.m.

Access Your Child’s Grades Through SIS ParentVueLearn how your ParentVUE account allows you to easily access grade reports and other helpful information about your child.

Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy

Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office 703-912-4500.

Library News

Library News:

The majority of 7th grade English classes visited the library this week to select a narrative nonfiction title.  In case you’re wondering what exactly a “narrative nonfiction” book is, I’ll share.  The book is nonfiction, so true, but it is written in a style that reads like a novel, with a clear beginning, middle and ending.  The library has a huge collection of these titles since our school has been doing this project for many years.  In case you have a student who passed on an opportunity to borrow a narrative nonfiction title from the school library, you can help him or her out by knowing exactly what type of book they should find at a public library, within your own book shelves, or from a book store.  [Note: there is NO need to go the extra mile to get a book; there are plenty in the Irving library if you’d like for your student to try again to find a desirable title!

We’ve been missing our students during break time.  Since the cold, snowy mess has kept students from going outside during break, we also have not had the opportunity to host break sessions in the library.  We’ll see them soon.  If your child is a reader and needs more material, remind them that they can create an e-Hall pass to come to the library anytime that there is free time in the classroom.
