We have enjoyed a full week back with the students. Our teachers hit the ground running with engaging activities. On Thursday, our Literacy Core Team conducted a Learning Walk to gather information on the implementation of the new Benchmark curriculum for Language Arts. This activity is part of the process as we adapt to a new program and provides insights for what is working well and where we are seeing challenges across the school. The Literacy Core team members are classroom teachers, our reading specialist, and administrators. Since our first Leaning Walk in November, we are seeing students more accustomed to the routines and strategies the teachers use during reading and writing activities. We are seeing high levels of student engagement and close alignment between classes within the same grade level. We are grateful for the hard work of our teachers and staff and proud of the strong instruction we see at White Oaks.
We wish you a restful long weekend and hope everyone stays warm during the approaching cold snap.
Teachers will include a report of your child’s performance on our most recent unit assessment in the Friday Folder on 1/24. This report includes each of the standards that were assessed and your child’s score on each standard. A list of grade level standards can be found on the VDOE website under the 2024 English Standards of Learning.
As part of our new curriculum this year for Language Arts, all students will be completing a unit assessment at the end of each unit. These assessments will provide teachers with a snapshot of how students are progressing in grade level expectations and include questions that cover multiple progress report standards. These assessments will be one of many data points that will be considered when assigning progress report scores.
The unit assessment is a measure of your child’s performance on grade level standards. In Language Arts, students will be working on their grade level standards throughout the year and are not expected to master all of their grade-level standards until later in the school year. You can expect performance on the unit assessments to increase over time as the students continue to learn and practice their grade level skills. The results of this assessment will inform your child’s teacher of areas where they need additional instruction and practice, so they can continue to work towards mastering grade level standards.
As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. We monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.
