A Note from the Principal's Desk

Dear Willow Springs families,

This week we all returned to our regular school routines and jumped right back into learning. It has been a full week and time seemed to fly by. Our 6th grade students had a VERY busy and exciting week with a great fieldtrip to the National Portrait Gallery in D.C. and a middle school transition meeting with Katherine Johnson Middle School counselor, Ms. Oeur.

Students in grades 3-6 started taking iReady tests in reading and math as part of the winter testing window. Students in grades 1 and 2 are taking iReady math tests and students in K-2 are participating in VALLSS testing. Mid-year testing will provide data to guide instructional decisions for the remainder of the school year.

As we all know, this week we have experienced some very low temperatures and students have had indoor recess. Teachers will take students out when temperatures are above freezing. To ensure your child can fully participate in outdoor activities, please make sure your child comes to school wearing clothing that will keep them warm. If you can't find that jacket or sweater or sweatshirt, etc., please check our Lost and Found area in the lobby. It is full of warm and unclaimed clothing and more.

Don't forget that Monday is a school holiday. We wish all of you a safe and enjoyable 3-day weekend. Go Commanders!!

With warmest wishes,

Dylan Taylor, Principal

Ipsa Stringer, Assistant Principal

Laura Tapper, Assistant Principal

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. Schools monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.

Our WSES Spring SOL Calendar is here and testing will take place in May.

Spring 2025 SOL Testing Calendar

Now that Winter Break is over, many of us turn our attention to planning our spring and summer activities and travel. As you make plans for the warmer months, please keep in mind that our 3rd - 6th grade students will be taking standardized tests (SOLs) in May and June.

If you can avoid traveling or appointments that will keep your child out of school on a scheduled testing date, that would be greatly appreciated and will benefit your child. Students tend to prefer taking these tests in their classrooms and learning spaces with their peers and their usual teachrs. When students are absent on a testing day, they are eligible for a makeup opportunity, but the makeup test will be given by any available staff and it will not take place in the classroom.

The calendar is linked here. Please know the schedule is subject to change.

We will be sharing more information about testing in the new year. Please stay tuned and attend PTA meetings if possible.
