Read the City's First State of the Urban Forest
Fairfax City’s urban forestry program is growing — which is documented in the city’s first State of the Urban Forest, a new annual report that summarizes the city’s tree accomplishments.
The four-page report is chock-full of facts and figures, including how many trees were planted (130), the number of city parks surveyed for invasive species (25), and the number of years the city has received a Tree City USA award (38).
Readers will meet the urban forestry staff, receive an overview of the Sprout initiative, and enjoy the poetic observation of trees by Daniels Run Elementary School’s Aarna Damle.

Attend the Opening Reception for the Inaugural Rogue Arts Project Exhibition at the Sherwood Center, Jan. 22
Fairfax City is renowned for its vibrant art community, and the Rotary Gallery in the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center displays many of their works. The gallery is curated by a seasoned, insightful artist who presents the best of the Fairfax art community.
The Commission on the Arts has selected Debra Wright of the Rouge Arts Project to curate the Rotary Gallery, and her inaugural show is currently on display.
The public is invited to attend the opening reception of Wright’s inaugural show from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Sherwood Center, 3740 Blenheim Blvd.

Please Use Winter Salt Sparingly
 The Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin wants you be aware of the negative impacts of using too much winter salt. Salt corrodes infrastructure (bridges, roads, pipes, etc.), harms aquatic wildlife, and pollutes our drinking water. According to ICPRB, "Chloride levels in the Potomac River [a main source of the area's drinking water] have increased 10-fold in the past 80 years." Learn more during Winter Salt Awareness Week, Jan. 27-31.
