January 16th, 2025
Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,
Students and teachers were back into their rhythm this week with full school days and regular schedules. In 6th grade, students were determining theme in poems by reading and annotating passages. Students in 2nd grade were focusing on phonics and examining vowel patterns and in 3rd grade students were analyzing and making inferences about Egyptian artifacts. First grade students from Mrs. Thurston's class went outside to make observations and look for evidence of birds near their pinecone birdfeeders!
Don't forget about our upcoming events! Heritage and Traditions night will be on Wednesday, January 22nd from 5-7 pm in the FHES gym. See the message below about how you can be involved or join the event. The winter chorus, band and strings concert will be held at JMHS on Thursday, January 23rd at 7:00 pm. Come out to see our students share their talents of the big stage! Finally, please join us for the PTA meeting on Thursday, January 16th at 5:15 pm in the FHES library. We hope to see you there!
Four student teachers from Seoul National University of Education in South Korea have arrived at FHES. These aspiring educators have been able to visit classrooms, talk with students and observe instruction this week. This is a great opportunity for FHES to share and show the many wonderful parts of our community that contribute to our school. Also, FHES hosted the Madison Pyramid Get2Green meeting today. Teacher leaders from across the pyramid came to FHES to work together, share ideas and see examples of outdoor learning projects at Flint Hill. Thank you to Ms. Kuykendall and Mrs. Chang for supporting this visit today!
With regards,
Mr. Montaquila, Principal
Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal

The School Board approved plans for a new FHES playground at the December 5th School Board Meeting!
A project team met with the school today (1/16) and once the materials are available the project may be able to begin ahead of the projected schedule. While there will be a few weeks of construction at FHES, our students will continue to have access to our fields, blacktops and the recently completed futsal and basketball courts.
More information about the project can be found here.
Thank you to the FCPS School Board and FCPS Facilities for supporting this investment in resources for our school and community!

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. We are notified by safety and security if the temperatures get too low. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing (labeled with the name!), so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. On the majority of days, students will go outside for recess.
Consistently low temperatures and a lack of melting have impacted our ability to access our playground in recent days. Once we have had a reasonable amount of thawing of the playground area, classes will resume outdoor recess.
Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made. FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated. Be sure to plan for the winter season.
If you need assistance getting cold weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.
Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.
Read about how families can help form good attendance habits. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Good communication between home and school is vital to a successful school experience for each child. Questions relating to your child should be directed to the classroom teacher. All teachers have voice mail and an e-mail address. The school has a web page that links directly to each teacher’s e-mail.
Each year, FCPS produces a Handbook for its FCPS families. It contains valuable information you may need throughout the year, including calendars, services, and special programs, the instructional program, and information about starting school. Flint Hill Elementary has produced a handbook that includes some additional notes that are important for our school community.
