Welcome back to Your Midday Sun, hope you had a wonderful weekend!
If you're wondering if there is a word to sum up 2024, this might be it. The Oxford University Press released its word of the year — in two words: "Brain rot."
Oxford defines brain rot as "the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging." Given that Oxford's word of the year last year was "rizz," a riff on "charisma," this seems on-brand.

The Toronto Public Library is apologizing after a woman says her lost child was denied help at the Riverdale branch at Broadview Ave. and Gerrard St. E. after the 11-year-old girl's separate day youth program on Friday ended two hours early. Kevin Connor has the details. ALSO:
• The OPP say they expect to reopen Hwy. 11 between Orillia and Huntsville this afternoon after significant snowfall in the area over the weekend. • York Regional Police are on the hunt for two men after an armed home invasion last week in which the intruders tried to rob a safe in the residence in the Daffodil Ave. and Poinsetta Dr. area of Markham. • A 25-year-old Pickering man has been charged with second-degree murder in the Sunday morning slaying of his 64-year-old mother following a collision on Weyburn Square. • Two people were injured in a crash involving a car and transport truck on Hwy. 401 at Courtice Rd. early Sunday.
• A speed camera on Parkside Dr. has been knocked down for the second time in as many weeks. More from Connor. |
U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to go back on his word and issue a categorical pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, just weeks before his scheduled sentencing on gun and tax convictions was a surprise that wasn’t all that surprising. But by choosing to put his family first, the 82-year-old president — who had pledged to restore a fractured public’s trust in the nation’s institutions and respect for the rule of law — has raised new questions about his already teetering legacy.
ALSO:
• The U.S. Postal Service has temporarily suspended accepting mail headed to Canada due to the strike by Canada Post workers.
• The Israeli military says Hezbollah has fired into a disputed border zone, its first attack since a so-called ceasefire took hold last week, after Lebanon accused Israel of violating the truce more than 50 times in recent days.
• Fifty-six people were killed, including several children, and many others were injured in a stampede at a soccer stadium in southern Guinea, following clashes between fans after a disputed penalty.
• An impeachment complaint was filed against Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte over a death threat she made against the president and her alleged role in extra-judicial killings of drug suspects, corruption, and failure to stand up to Chinese aggression in the disputed South China Sea. |
Nuclear energy is undergoing a bit of a renaissance in Ontario as the Ford government looks to expand the energy source for the first time in decades.
This comes as part of an expected surge for electricity demand in the province over the coming years, coupled with a desire by the premier to turn Ontario into an energy powerhouse that exports green energy across North America. Additionally, the plan is to not only use the technology for domestic uses but to try to deploy a small nuclear reactor to the Moon.

In case you missed last week's star-studded Thanksgiving dinner at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, the president-elect urged Elon Musk, seated to his right, to bust a move at the table while Trump's youngest son Barron, seated to his dad's left, could only look on with the kind of second-hand embarrassment any 18-year-old would have at such an event.
