Dress for Cold Weather

Cold Weather Information

When bad weather occur, it may be necessary for FCPS to cancel, delay, or close schools early. Please have a plan in place in the event of these emergency situations. Children need to know where to go or what to do if a family member would not be home.

The safety of students and staff is the priority when FCPS makes a decision about school closures and delays.

Throughout the winter weather, FCPS and Bren Mar Park ES monitor the weather for very low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside.  Students do continue to participate in outdoor recess during the cold weather months.  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and/or other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors.

Exceptions to outdoor recess are when there is a warning for unsafe temperature conditions or clothing doesn't support safe play.  You can get more information on National Weather Service website, which includes tips on staying safe during cold weather

Specialist Spotlight - Technology

Last month, we celebrated Digital Citizenship week, where students learned how to be safe and responsible users of technology.  Wondering how you can promote digital citizenship at home? Here are some tips:

  • Talk openly: Talk with your child about what they like to do online.  Discuss their online activities, including websites, games, and apps.  Make sure to talk about what they do on the laptop at school, as well as any devices at home, like iPads or phones. If you would like to see what websites they visit at school and how many times they visit each site, you can sign up for a weekly report from Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service.
  • Set limits: Establish clear rules for device usage, including screen time.  Consider creating a family technology contract together.
  • Teach critical thinking: Help your children evaluate information online and be wary of scams, phishing attempts, and fake news.  Third graders and above can play Reality River, which is a game that teaches kids to be critical about information they read or hear online.

Promote kindness: Remind your children to treat others with respect, both online and offline.  Discuss the impact of cyberbullying and the importance of reporting it.  3rd graders and above can play the game Kind Kingdom to practice promoting kindness.
