Kitchen fire could have been "far worse"; no working smoke alarms in house

A fire at 253 Second Avenue West could have been “far worse” than just a gutted kitchen.

Deputy fire chief Greg Saunders said all three fire stations responded to the blaze around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters were on scene within two minutes of the alarm.

As this residence was a rental, the owner of the property has been charged with three counts of failing to maintain smoke alarm in operating condition, and further fire orders are pending.

A $320,000 “fully automated public washroom” has been constructed in Callander.

The new public washroom facility is located on Lansdowne Street West located near the boat launch and docks.
