The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released an informational bulletin to remind states about current requirements and state flexibilities in verifying financial eligibility for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in accordance with the Social Security Act and implementing regulations. These requirements are designed to promote efficient and appropriate use of federal and state dollars, while ensuring individuals eligible for Medicaid or CHIP enroll in and retain coverage, and individuals who are not eligible are successfully transitioned to other appropriate coverage. In addition, these requirements ease the administrative burden on states by maximizing use of electronic data sources, thereby reducing the need to process documentation or other additional information from applicants and beneficiaries and reducing denial and termination of coverage for procedural reasons.

For more information, please review the informational bulletin and slide deck.
