Patients nominate Sudbury doctor for outstanding care and dedication: Thanks to his family doctor in Sudbury, Mark Lair was able to go into the bush and hunt this fall.

It might not have happened if Dr. Valerie Mantle hadn’t detected a breathing problem stemming from a birth defect that had never been diagnosed.

“In 2019, my husband began having breathing issues,” said Nedine Lair, Mark’s wife. “Dr. Mantle did numerous tests, before referring him to a specialist. This resulted in the discovery of a very rare birth defect, for which he had surgery.

“If not for Dr. Mantle’s persistence, my husband might not be here today.”

Nedine Lair made the comments as part of a campaign to highlight the essential role of family doctors. The Ontario College of Family Physicians asked Ontarians a simple question: “Tell us how your family doctor has gone above and beyond for you?”

The response was overwhelming and heartfelt, with more than 750 family physicians, including 11 in Sudbury, being honoured. This included Dr. Mantle, who is being recognized for the outstanding care she provides and her dedication to the community.

Ward 10 Coun. Fern Cormier wants to know how much the work of Greater Sudbury’s soon-to-be terminated integrity commissioner has cost.

Cormier noted in the motion that taxpayers have a right to know the costs of those services, which include complaint investigations and reports; advice to council; information disseminated to the public; and education and training.

Currently, those expenses are not publicly available.

Noting the hourly costs of the IC fall “entirely on the municipal tax base,” Cormier presented a resolution directing staff to post “the total costs of integrity commissioner services,” separated into the aforementioned categories.

Cormier asked that the information be posted on the city’s website (greatersudbury.ca) on a quarterly basis.

The real fun of weekend No. 1 of Silver Stick play began once the round robin games were done.

Sure, there were some of the seven divisions of A-level hockey that remained true to form in moving from preliminary round action to the elimination games, but upsets and surprises were almost equally mixed in.

Exhibit A: the U11 A Division.

With 12 teams divided into four pools of three, the format called for all 12 teams to make the playoffs, playing their fourth game of the tournament, in a worse-case scenario, as a play-in playoff game.

Given the above, a 1-1-1 record hardly sounded a death knell for the Copper Cliff Reds, despite a relatively slow start for the team that already had a tournament final appearance in Halton Hills this fall.

Seeded eighth, but confident in their matchup with the first-seeded Porcupine Junior Gold Kings, the Reds needed double overtime to earn a 2-1 victory in a contest in which they enjoyed a notable territorial advantage.
