Today, our public service reporter Catherine Morrison brings us a story fresh from Brussels.
As one of three winners of the 2024 EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship, she got a first-hand look at how the European Union operates — and specifically — how European public servants work from home.
There are no common European Union rules on telework, meaning that its 27 countries have very different approaches to it. You can read about how civil servants in countries like Luxembourg, Sweden and Bulgaria approach remote work in her story below.
When I asked her what the experience was like, here’s what she said:
“On top of being inspired by the city’s amazing public transit system, I was glad to have the opportunity to tour EU institutions, newsrooms and take part in over a dozen sessions about topics like migration, the growth of artificial intelligence, foreign interference and emergency response. The experience allowed me to better understand the relationship between Canada and the EU and how they can learn from each other.”
(Plus, she also told me she had the “best pizza of her life.”)
Now, here’s your news for the day.
