Chicago Tribune Opinion

Monday, October 28, 2024

Good morning.

This weekend, the Tribune wrapped up its endorsements in the 2024 general election with our final batch of choices for the contested races in the Illinois House, as well as our view on the statewide (advisory) ballot question regarding the so-called "Millionaire's Tax," that would ask anyone with an income of $1 million or more to pay significantly more in state income tax. We also weighed in Sunday on a variety of ballot questions, ranging from term limits in Skokie to proportional representation in Oak Park.

We're getting all of these endorsements organized for you and we will print our much-loved "bedsheet ballot" in the coming days. We also plan to partner with Injustice Watch to help you with your choices for which judges should be retained.

Today, we return to normal service with an editorial about the distressing situation surrounding the rapper Lil Durk, arrested on murder-for-hire charges.

We have a lot of fascinating opinion pieces for you, too, including the return of our architectural columnist Edward Keegan, who has a take on a very interesting glassy building in Uptown. Both Clarence Page and some Chicago-area faith leaders wrote this weekend, too, and I was especially fascinated by a piece that looks at media history, or "the ghosts of journalists past."

With the election just days away, our mailboxes are filled with readers with strong opinions. So we decided to offer up an expanded selection of our letters to the editor missives.

One final note. The Tribune is endorsing in every contested race except for President of the United States. That's in response to a policy, announced more than a year ago, by our owners. That's not a choice made by the editorial board. However, no-one has interfered with any of our other selections. You have my word on that.

Just wanted to keep you apprised. Enjoy the fall day. Early voting is open.

— Chris Jones, editorial page editor
