Good morning, Wentyl.

“You get what you get and you don’t get upset”.

The surprise hit from the education team this week was a story from Darcy Fitzgerald about a mother’s concern that a childcare educator offered her four-year-old daughter this golden nugget of old-style parenting.

The Adelaide mum Megan Watson said she’d never used such a term with her daughter and would prefer a “less brutal” approach.

It reminded me of a piece I wrote recently about the need to bring back ‘70s parenting phrases like "Tough titties", "Take it or leave it", "My roof, my rules", and yes, "You get what you get and you don’t get upset".

A poll in that story with more than 3400 readers revealed 97 per cent agreed kids need tough love to build resilience.

imageThe Adelaide mother took to the modern equivalent of the town square, TikTok, to ask other parents if they were okay with the phrase "You get what you get and you don't get upset".

Also this week children in all states returned to school, with year 12s in NSW starting HSC exams, and others busy with muck-up day pranks.

If you’ve got a year 12 in your family, check out our handy guide here.

We marked school going back by exploring private school rivalries in four states: if you’ve ever wondered who’s on top between Geelong Grammar v Geelong College in Victoria, BBC v Brisbane Grammar in Queensland, PAC v Saints in South Australia and Kambala v Kincoppal-Rose Bay in NSW, read our guide here.

(Hint: it’s less about year 12 grades, and more about sandstone edifices, old-tie privilege and acreage bragging rights)
