Local AI is finally good enough to put to work

Greetings!

People in the Stardock community have always been ahead of the curve on technology. Things are changing fast, and we want to do our part to keep you up to date on what's going on.

This mailer is about local AI: AI that runs on your own computer to get things done. It has come a long way in recent months. We wrote a primer on it here: The Local AI Primer.

If you already use Start11 or Fences, you know what a better workflow is worth. Local AI adds something new to that: a silent worker that can classify and organize things for you.

Example 1: Organizing your downloads folder

In Clairvoyance, you can have a local AI intelligently organize your downloads directory. It is not as fast as a cloud model like Codex or Claude, but who cares? You fire it off and forget about it.

Example 2: Windows Search

One reason Windows search is so bad is that it was built on the assumption there would be a lot of metadata attached to your files to help it along. Spoiler alert: nothing adds that metadata.

Local AI can. And because it runs locally, none of your files leave your machine.

Example 3: Scheduled work

Last week a new model shipped called Qwen 3.8 27B. Clearly no marketing department involved. But in real world use it is well into the “good enough” phase to do actual work. For most people it will also be slow. You would not want to sit and chat with it. But what about scheduling work overnight?

Here is what I have it do every night in Clairvoyance:

  1. Go through crash reports and write reports.
  2. Talk to our Discord bots and tell me what the general topics were.
  3. Look through the server logs for anything crashing constantly.
  4. Go through my Outlook inbox and flag email I should actually read.
  5. Write up basic agendas for the next day's meetings.

I could use Claude or Codex to do all of that a lot faster. But this is free, and I would run these overnight anyway.

This stuff is brand new

Local models were basically a toy until this summer, and even then they were hard to set up. That is where Clairvoyance comes in. Open settings, browse the models, and it will tell you whether your hardware can handle a given model and walk you through the rest.

You have not missed anything yet. The Qwen update only landed last Friday.

If you are receiving this email, there is a very good chance you will like Clairvoyance.
