AFC at 50: Folklife at Work

10/09/2026 08:00 AM EDT

The American Folklife Center has been rolling out special programming all year, in celebration of its 50th anniversary. On September 17th, during Live! at the Library, the Center will open its exhibition, "Alive in Many Hands: The American Folklife Center at 50." The exhibition is intended to provide visitors with an exploration of what folklife is, how it has been documented in the Center's archives, and what they can do to sustain folk traditions in their own communities. As part of a series of blog posts celebrating the exhibition, this post shares a selection of items on display from the AFC and Veterans History Project (VHP) archives in the exhibition section entitled, Folklife at Work. As discussed, this part of the exhibition is dedicated to exploring the concept of occupational folklife through examples from the collections, encouraging visitors to reflect on the cultural knowledge and skills that they have learned and employ in their wide-ranging places of work.
