Victoria Monét’s been in the industry for some time now, having first made her name as a witty, laser-sharp songwriter for other artists like Ariana Grande. But I’ve loved seeing her come into her own as a performer over the last few years (“On My Mama” hasn’t left my regular rotation since 2023), and her new album Frequency of Love is divine. I’d call the overarching theme “sensually reverential” — nods to classic R&B sounds and songs abound (Brandy, Joe, Dru Hill, quiet storm more generally) while she maintains her lyrical cheekiness and honey-coated vocalization. The whole album’s worth a listen, but the standouts for me are “See You In My Dreams” with SZA, “Say Dat,” and “Almost.” |
