You worked hard enough this week. Let us plan your weekend…
1.
Raise your hand if Carrie White’s first period traumatized you more than your own. Sorry to reopen the wound, but she’s back. While Carrie, Mike Flanagan’s new eight-episode reimagining of Stephen King’s 1974 novel, keeps many of the original’s greatest hits (the hyper-religious mother, relentless bullying, telekinetic powers, and, yes, that bucket of blood), it digs deeper into the characters. Plus, it updates the story for the present day, where social media makes the relationship between Carrie (Summer Howell) and her classmates even more fraught. Still not sold? Just take it from King himself, who said of Prime Video’s reboot, “I couldn’t stop watching the show.”
For anyone who’d rather spend zero brain cells on getting dressed, these three deceptively put-together outfit formulas all start with two pieces that are probably already in your closet. Decision fatigue? Don’t know her.
4.
If the last time you logged into Facebook was to poke your crush, The Social Reckoning highlights what you missed. Aaron Sorkin’s sequel (sorry, “companion piece”) to The Social Network follows Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison, who opened up to us about the role), the real-life Facebook product manager turned whistleblower who leaked thousands of documents to Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) — some showing the company knew about the platform’s rampant misinformation, radicalization, and harm to teen mental health, and failed to fix it. Oh, and playing Mark Zuckerberg? Not Jesse Eisenberg, but Jeremy Strong, sporting an uncannily Zuck-like hairdo. We’d expect nothing less from the King of Method Acting.
Happy (almost) weekend. I’m reporting to you from Alabama, where I’m celebrating my dear friends’ wedding tomorrow. I firmly believe every destination wedding should also be a vacation, so my boyfriend and I kicked off our trip in Memphis, where we listened to live music and ate nothing but barbecue. Now it’s on to Huntsville for the main event. Here’s what I’ll be up to:
Wearing a wedding-guest dress in fashion’s new favorite shade of yellow. It’s earthy, sophisticated, and roughly 100 times more flattering than butter yellow. Can you tell I wasn’t a fan?
Leaning into the country vibes by playing The Chicks’ Taking the Long Wayon repeat. I’m going to their show next week, where, yes, I will be belting “Not Ready to Make Nice” at the top of my lungs.
Saying a prayer of gratitude for my tried-and-true wedding shoes, the only heels that have never hurt my feet… and consequently, the only ones I own. (In both nude and black.) And no, I will not be hearing block-heel sandal slander at this time.
Shopping for jeans. I usually consider it my own personal circle of hell, but these versions — which apparently look like the real thing, but feel like sweatpants — have me excited to browse. The first is an optical illusion I need to see to believe.
Looking forward to the flight home, so I can inhale more of this classic American novel, which I’m loving. It actually feels illegal that I, a Brooklyn resident, have not read it before now. If anyone knows Greta Gerwig, can you please tell her she needs to adapt it ASAP?
