Good afternoon from Washington, which President Donald Trump has escaped for the heat of the campaign trail. The president was in San Antonio last night for a rally with Ken Paxton, the Republican who’s up against James Talarico in a race for a seat that could determine control of the Senate. Paxton has been battered by tough headlines lately after he made candid comments about the state of the race at closed-door fundraisers that were subsequently leaked, and Talarico leads many of the polls. On Wednesday night, Trump made a forceful case against Talarico, whom Trump claims is a vegan. (Talarico is a carnivore.) “My wife told me, ‘Sir, do me a favor, you have to do me just a little bit of a favor. It’s not vay-gun, it’s vegan,’” Trump told the crowd. “How the hell would I know? I like steak!” We are 25 days away from Election Day. In this edition of Party Animals: Washington’s perma-class has long lamented the death of the DC dinner party. In Trump’s second term, Katie Miller, the wife of Trump’s Rasputin, is reviving the old tradition—with a few twists (and a mechanical bull, and sake-squirting hibachi chefs, and a petting zoo). Also mentioned in this issue: Scott Bessent, Karoline Leavitt, Abdul El-Sayed, Brett McGurk, Emily Sundberg, Will Scharf, Jason Miller, Phil Wegmann, Josh Dawsey, Win McNamee, and more. Got tips? Hit the Party Animals hotline: aidan_mclaughlin@condenast.com. Or text me—my number is 917-817-8266. Complaints will be hidden under the mechanical bull. Praise will be surreptitiously recorded and subsequently leaked. |
