The use of GLP-1 medications has been rising rapidly in Australia, with an estimated half a million people now using them.
The drugs, sold under brand names Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, mimic the activity of a natural hormone, helping people feel full for longer.
But they are not without risk.
Anaesthetists are urging patients to disclose the use of weight-loss jabs or unapproved peptides before surgery, after a new study found an 11-fold risk of aspiration or regurgitation under general anaesthetic for GLP-1 users: a very serious complication, which can be fatal.
In other research news, an Australian study has linked more frequent exposure to anti-trans stigma with statistically higher rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.
Some of the people surveyed described the stigma they encountered online or in traditional media as "relentless", "omnipresent" and "inescapable".
