After days of speculation, Spain's prime minister has announced that voters will go to the polls in an early election next month. It follows weeks of demonstrations over housing costs and renters' rights. Sánchez's measures to tackle the crisis were "unexpectedly" defeated in parliament on Friday, writes Guy Hedgecoe from Madrid. The proposals were drafted after nationwide protests, sparked by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her flat after her rent increased more than five-fold. Sánchez's left-wing government has had a turbulent few months and most polls suggest the conservatives are likely to emerge as the largest party in the upcoming election. Although Sánchez clearly wants to take the "initiative... it's going to be very tough for him to remain in power", writes Guy.
