Dear Travel Fan,

Fall travel season is in full swing and we’re here to help. Gliding along the water while taking in the brilliant colors of autumn is a fun twist on the usual fall road trip, and we’ve rounded up suggestions for a leaf-peeping trip from an aquatic perspective. We’ve also found some new or newly refurbished hotels that are perfect for autumn travel, whether you’re looking for some nature or a city break.

This is a lovely time to visit Ireland, too — and we show you how to do it without a car. We’ve also got a list of some wonderful new restaurants in the South of France, where the summer crowds have eased. And our 36 Hours visits the Canadian city of Vancouver, where you can bike — or scooter — along the sea wall and then enjoy an incredibly diverse food scene.

On the news front, a U.S.-based tour operator filed suit against the Trump administration, to stop it from charging foreign tourists higher fees to visit some national parks and other public lands. And if you’re been procrastinating about getting your first passport, you’ll soon be able to apply for one from your home computer.

When Dolly Parton died in August, her final hospitality project, the SongTeller Hotel in downtown Nashville, was just weeks from opening. We recently checked in and have a report about how it carries on Dolly’s legacy.

And, finally, in this week’s Tripped Up column, Seth Kugel helps out a traveler whose ticket on Air Canada was canceled after she missed one leg of her trip. The column itself is full of helpful advice, but I’d recommend reading the comments as well, where your fellow Times Travel fans share their own experiences, including their assessments of Air Canada’s customer service.

Wishing you safe and uninterrupted travels,
Amy Virshup
