The Recommendation

Today, we’ve got the makings of a terrific lunch. Plus:

A not-sad desk lunch starts with a good lunch box

Lunch is a meal that’s often eaten hurriedly — on jobsites, in crowded break rooms, and at desks. But that doesn’t mean it has to be a sad affair. An excellent lunch box can make the sometimes perfunctory-feeling meal more pleasant, and perhaps even a little special.

Take, for instance, this elegant bowl. Not only does it come in pretty colors and fun patterns, its smart design also makes it a pleasure to use. We especially love it for salads, thanks to the large veggie compartment, separate tray for toppings, and tiny container for dressing. But, if you happen to pack something that needs reheating (an autumnal grain bowl, perhaps?), it’s microwave-safe, too. Bon appétit.

Adults deserve great lunch boxes, too→

In the store: A stylish serving platter

Jono Pandolfi Oval Platter Ceramic Stoneware
Jono Pandolfi

I love the sturdy simplicity of this platter from Jono Pandolfi, a ceramics studio that produces dinnerware for many cool restaurants. It’s a perfect blank slate for all kinds of dishes and occasions, and I find myself pulling it out just about every time I’m feeding guests — whether to offer them cheese and crackers, serve a salad, or make store-bought cookies look special.

Don’t forget the pickle

Our favorites include a garlicky spear, a floppy slice best enjoyed in a sub, and a snappy, dill-forward option→

Jars of pickles are a shown along with olives, onions, salt and garlic.

Today’s great deal: Coffee beans from around the world

This subscription service is ideal for any coffee lover who wants to try brews from lesser-known growing regions around the globe. Every month, a bag of beans is delivered from a different country. We once tested beans from Burundi and were impressed by the beautifully earthy, savory quality.

Plus: We blended an entire pizza — for journalism

In this week’s episode of Wirecutter Recommends, two of our kitchen experts — pros with decades of experience in restaurants, as cooks, and at Wirecutter testing thousands of products — share the five most dependable appliances they’ve ever found.

Not only will these picks last for life, they also aced every single one of our rigorous tests — including, yes, liquefying an entire pizza.

One last thing: The best early Fall Prime Day deals

A light-blue grid features a cylindrical air purifier on top, a white mattress on a black metal bed frame on the bottom left, and a Remington hair straightener set against a bright yellow background on the right.
NYT Wirecutter

Like it or not, Prime Day is almost here again. Though things don’t officially kick off until next week, we’re already seeing a few decent deals on some of our favorite items, like a sparkly solid gold bracelet, a fabric shaver to de-pill your fall sweaters, and a bra comfy enough to wear all day long.
