The readers have spoken
Dear Watchers,More than 100,000 of you voted in our reader poll, and the results are in: Here are The 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century as chosen by readers, a fascinating counterpoint to the centerpiece industry list we published last week. That industry list was voted on by more than 500 actors, writers, creators and other TV professionals from around the world. (Here’s a sample of some notable ballots.) Readers had a lot of thoughts about their selections; thousands of you voiced your opinions in the comments section, which is still open. I’m pleased to see there has been no actual rioting. But even more of you expressed your feelings at the ballot box, and the outcome is telling: The very top of the reader list will look extremely familiar. Meanwhile, readers staked claims for shows including “Abbott Elementary,” “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “Derry Girls,” which weren’t on our industry 100, and for shows like “Ted Lasso” and “Gilmore Girls,” which made enormous gains. Also of note: “The Sopranos” is still not on the list. That show debuted in 1999 and was not eligible. A zero-sum list — sort of
Of course, for every new winner in this zero-sum game, there is also a new loser. And so the reader Top 100 bids adieu to shows including critical favorites like “Enlightened” and “The Comeback,” which had especially precipitous falls. But let’s not dwell too long on terms like “winners” and “losers”: Scroll down to the bottom of the reader list, and you’ll see that we have also published the next 400 in line. If there is no justice to be found in the Top 100 for our many “Rick & Morty” fans, they can perhaps find some comfort in seeing its position at No. 101 in the reader rankings. Click here to see the full 500. Many thanks to everyone who participated. And again, even though voting is closed, our comments section isn’t. Let us know what you think. Lastly, don’t forget to save the TV shows you want to watch. (As of last week, our readers’ most-saved shows were “Station Eleven” and “The Bureau.”) You can find them any time in the You tab of the Times app. Happy watching.
