I love a good love story. And this week we have lots of them in a special piece about 33 surgeons, specialists and general practitioners who found love with other doctors.
National health reporter Taylor Penny reveals romantic stories about how they met, their interesting dinner table conversations and the secrets to how they make it work amid very busy schedules. One of my favourites quotes was from surgeon Saam Tourani explaining the moment he realised that obstetrician and gynaecologist Affie Tourani was the one. They were on a date when their plans to get pizza went a bit pear shaped. “I suggested abandoning our plan for pizza and simply getting something from the local supermarket. Affie was having none of it,” he said. “I remember looking at her determination and thinking, rather unexpectedly, ‘if she is this determined about getting a pizza, this
is probably the woman I want to be the mother of my children’.” You can see more about each couple here.
Meanwhile, with a mass exodus occurring from expensive Gold-level health insurance - which costs about $400 a month and is needed for pregnancy to be covered - we have examined when self-funding a birth in the private system is actually cheaper.
