This spring, Alex Bores ran for Congress on a platform dedicated to regulating AI. He lost the primary: the issue was important to voters, but just one of many. Dire warnings about the technology wiping out humanity have moved AI up Americans’ priority list. Over the past week, as Mr Bores told our Washington bureau chief, an “undeniable momentum to do something” about AI has swelled. The trickier question is what the regulation should be.

From 2014 to 2024, the average German’s real income rose by 0.6% a year. In the previous decade—despite the global financial crisis—the figure was 1.5%.
