Calm Atlantic Hurricane Season Could Mean Active One in the Pacific

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season that officially began June 1 has been mild — so far. There have been very few named storms in the Atlantic and the National Weather Service expects “below normal” hurricane activity.

But calm in the Atlantic could mean enhanced hurricane activity in the Pacific as El Niño warms seawater and lowers wind shear, a perfect storm for hurricane conditions.

Recently, Hurricane Lala ravaged parts of Hawaii, even though direct landfalls are rare in the state. Hurricane Lowell also brought more storm damage in the Pacific.

Coastal states face uncertainty during hurricane season but the Census Bureau has tools that can help communities prepare for the worst and plan for recovery from any disaster.
