Palace angered by Earl Spencer's claims

Earl Spencer's memoir about his sister Diana, Princess of Wales, is not hitting the shelves until next week, but a preview has already prompted an unusually strong response from Buckingham Palace. Earl Spencer claims that King Charles told him, in the wake of Diana's death in 1997, that "we'll forget her soon enough", according to excerpts published in the Daily Mail. The Palace responded: "His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory." The row threatens to overshadow a day of multiple royal events, our correspondent Sean Coughlan says, potentially reopening a very difficult time in the recent history of the Royal Family.

Europe and Canada are 'stronger together', Carney says

Canada's PM Mark Carney has said he "welcomes" the idea of his country becoming the EU's "first associate member" in his address to the European Parliament, in which he called for stronger cooperation. The "associate member" status does not currently exist, but US President Donald Trump reacted to the suggestion by threatening "serious tariffs" on the EU and calling it "laughable".
