Today’s Briefing

As the school year gets underway, here are 10 tech protection strategies for your kids and their friends.

Jeff Woodke, an American missionary kidnapped by Islamic terrorists, talks about maintaining faith in captivity.

After decades of providing free health care to migrants, a doctor in Singapore is trying to be a "housekeeper" for God, running a private retreat and guesthouse for the weary.

Our culture pushes us toward estrangement and overlooks the biblical possibility of reconciliation, author Noelle Mering argues in No Contact.

Kristin Kobes Du Mez’s women-focused sequel to Jesus and John Wayne offers fascinating history but an essentially misleading argument, writes Bonnie Kristian.

Behind the Story

From features editor Kristy Etheridge: Last year, my fourth grader came home from school and told me that some of his classmates had talked to ChatGPT on their Chromebooks. The chatbot promptly asked for their names and told them it was their friend. Let’s just say the parents’ WhatsApp group lit up that night, and emails to the principal followed.

That incident and many others inspired my essay on kids and screens. I’m increasingly convinced that the only solution is a communal one. And Christians are well positioned to lead the way. For the record, I’m not anti-tech. My husband and I love watching movies and TV with our kids. (This summer, they discovered the ’90s time capsule Full House.) FaceTime calls help connect us to our extended family. And I use social media for work and to keep up with friends in other cities.

I think Christian families can differ on screen-time nonessentials while setting up basic guardrails like Jonathan Haidt’s four norms—"no smartphones before high school, no social media before 16, phone-free schools," and more independence and free play. I’m sharing some other practical steps for parents in today’s story, and I welcome other ideas.

Wendell Berry—who died on August 31 at the age of 92—deeply influenced countless Christians through his fiction, essays, and poetry. I count myself among his adoring fans. To me, Berry…

IN THE MAGAZINE

Cover Image of the September/October issue, 2026.

For our 70th anniversary issue, we’re studying the past. Excerpts from our archives show evangelicals in Billy Graham’s day and our own grappling with our place in public life. A new book offers a fascinating history of Christian womanhood—but makes a misleading argument, according to our reviewer. We’re also peering into the future. Artificial intelligence, GLP-1 drugs, anti-aging surgeries, next steps for the pro-life movement: These are some of the issues likely to occupy Christians for the next seven decades. But mostly, we’re spending time in the present: With a Honduran man who found himself pastoring in a Massachusetts jail while detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. With the evangelical owners of a traditional Korean spa engaged in a religious freedom showdown. With faithful believers doing good work—a chef, an architect, a ball boy, a teacher (who, at age 91, is older than CT!). And with the writers of our newly expanded testimony section, who found God’s faithfulness in the midst of alien conspiracies, after a bad accident, and via an envelope in a refrigerator. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amid our own era’s change, conflict, and uncertainty, we hope this issue declares that reassuring truth.
