A tiny yellow box in my house is carrying a suspicious amount of responsibility.

It runs lights, sensors, automations, and the few things that instantly make a house feel silly when they stop working.

That box is my production Home Assistant Yellow. It has 2 GB of RAM and a CPU based on Raspberry Pi 4. Those specs are not impressive. Honestly, they were already a little modest when I bought it.

I use the built-in Zigbee chip for my Zigbee devices, one USB Z-Wave stick for a few Z-Wave devices, and that is it. No heroic rack. No secret data center behind the TV.

It works fine because I keep production deliberately boring.

That was not always true.
|
|
Years ago, I had collected devices, automations, scripts, half-finished tests, and a growing pile of ideas with names like “temporary.” My Home Assistant setup had become a drawer full of cables. Everything was technically somewhere. Finding the useful bit was the adventure.

I eventually started again. Now production stays slim and clean. I use separate Home Assistant test environments for experiments, and only promote something when it proves genuinely useful.

That approach keeps the house calm, but it also makes me careful with resources. With 2 GB of RAM, “it feels a little slow” is not a monitoring strategy.

The new video is about the friendly system monitor I wanted instead. Regular Home Assistant logic decides when the host deserves attention. The AI gets the smaller job: turn CPU, memory, and system-pressure readings into a short explanation and a few safe checks in normal language.

It is less about making a tiny box look clever and more about knowing when it needs a little attention before it starts composing a resignation letter.
