After months of negotiations, the Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez have finally agreed to terms on a massive contract extension.
The record-setting, four-year deal is worth $135 million with $102 million guaranteed, according to a league source. It surpasses that of Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who recently signed a four-year, $132 million contract with $101 million guaranteed.
The decision to sign Gonzalez reflects coach Mike Vrabel and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf’s approach to roster building. The two have stressed on multiple occasions the importance of drafting, developing, and retaining talent.
