The AfD's decisive victory in Germany's eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt is "very significant", Europe editor Katya Adler writes. Preliminary results put the far-right party well ahead of its mainstream rivals, winning 43.8% of the vote. The result means it's short of an outright majority and complex negotiations on who will run the state await. But this outcome suggests "Germany's political mainstream has failed voters", Katya notes, and could "further weaken and distract" the country at a time of European crisis. Even US President Donald Trump is paying attention to the result. So, what does Europe's biggest single economy do now?

Omar al-Bayoumi is at the heart of a $1 trillion (£733bn) lawsuit brought by 9/11 families. It argues Saudi Arabia was complicit in the attacks, and that Bayoumi aided two of the plane hijackers. Video evidence obtained in our investigation reveals that he indeed had extensive links to Saudi officials and shows him embracing one of al-Qaeda's future leaders. The footage, and other evidence that the FBI failed to share, undermines Bayoumi's 25 years of denials. He and the Saudi government have always denied any involvement in or prior knowledge of the attacks. The FBI declined to comment.
