Studio Rebrand
As AI makes it a lot quicker for founders to build startups from scratch, one venture studio is being forced to adapt.
Redesign Health has traditionally come up with startup ideas internally, before tapping a founder to run the company and build it alongside them. Since it began in 2018, the investor has produced companies like weight loss startup Calibrate and screening company Vault Health.
But Redesign has since rebranded from a venture studio, a distinction it’s insisted on for years, to a venture firm. It’s a plan Redesign set in motion in 2025, as the firm increasingly funds startups it didn’t build itself. One big reason is that AI has made it a lot faster and easier for founders to build their own companies, Head of New Ventures Neil Patel told me.
It’s a trend I’ve noticed covering startups, especially in the earlier stages, too. Many are reaching their first raise not long after being founded, such as Redesign’s latest bet on OmicsBank, which raised a seed round this week after it launched last year. The same speed has made Redesign’s old model of only backing companies it built feel like a constraint.
"We were cutting ourselves off from a large segment of the pool of founders and would-be founders just because we were saying that it has to be something that we had to originate internally," Patel said.
Instead, since a seed round I reported on earlier this year, Redesign has opened up to investing in startups that already exist. It will continue to provide support on strategy, hiring, fundraising and finding customers — support that traditional venture firms already give their startups, though Patel argues that Redesign’s years of research and building could be of help to startups.
I’ll be watching to see how other parts of health tech adapt to this new pace.
