On July 14, 2026, the government of the United Kingdom announced plans to introduce secondary legislation in the UK Parliament to amend the National Security and Investment Act 2021 (NSI). The aim is to refine mandatory investment screening rules and provide greater clarity for businesses.BackgroundThe NSI gives the government the authority to review and intervene in acquisitions of entities or assets located in the UK or connected to the UK economy if they could harm national security. It covers 17 sensitive areas of the economy, such as advanced materials, artificial intelligence, communications, data infrastructure, and defense. Companies operating in these sectors must notify the government of any acquisitions, known as mandatory notification, and officials must approve the acquisition before it is completed....
