Over two weeks our team spoke to more than 140 doctors
to find out what was really happening in a part of our health system that often gets overlooked. Some of the issues they spoke about were alarming. The one thing all these dedicated doctors had in common was that they worked in regional or rural Australia. They were honest and upfront about how patients were being let down. “If it’s taking you two months to get something done that if you lived in the city would take two days, then that substantially changes the outcome of that, potentially,” rural generalist Kaylee Davie said.
It was revealed that one man died of bowel cancer after a six-month wait for a colonoscopy. Another woman
gave up trying to find out if she had breast cancer
because it was so hard for her to travel to her appointment – and when she finally did manage to get there, it was cancelled. About 60 per cent of doctors said that the biggest challenge in their local area was attracting staff, then retaining them, and/or a lack of access to specialists. We’ve done a huge graphic that shows what each doctor said about their own community. We also have state-specific stories with more analysis and insight for NSW |

Meanwhile, if you are dating in the 35+ age bracket then you will want to read this column by Alita Brydon. She's opened up
about the things that women in their mid-30s and older start to find sexy about men.
“Once you hit your mid-thirties and beyond, you’ll find that – not only can you not be bothered doing your makeup to go to the shops – your taste in men drastically changes,” she writes. “You find yourself attracted to things that wouldn’t have even registered as mildly sexy to your younger self and the behaviour from romantic partners you used to think was perfectly acceptable, horrifies you. Bleg! I’m sure I’m not the only person whose idea of ‘what’s sexy’ has changed …” You can see
her list of what women start to find sexy here. Until next week.
