A Note from the Principal
Dear Daniels Run Families,
What an exciting week it has been at Daniels Run! Our staff has been busy preparing classrooms, planning for the year ahead, and most importantly, beginning to welcome our Dragons back to school. After a summer without our students, there is nothing better than seeing their smiling faces again!
Yesterday was especially wonderful as we welcomed our Kindergarten, PAC, and ECCB students and families during our Open House and then headed out into the community for our traditional Welcome Walk. Seeing students at their homes, meeting families, and feeling the excitement for the year ahead is always one of my favorite ways to begin a new school year. Thank you to everyone who welcomed our staff so warmly. These moments remind us that Daniels Run is much more than a building. We are a community.
And now, we are ready for Monday!
Monday, August 24: First Day of School
The first day of school is almost here! Our doors will open at 8:45 a.m., and classes begin at 9:00 a.m. We encourage students to come to school on Monday using the same mode of transportation they will typically use throughout the school year. Establishing that routine from the very first day helps students become comfortable and confident with arrival and dismissal procedures.
Please know that we will have plenty of staff members throughout the building and outside to greet students, help them find their classrooms, and make sure they get where they need to go. Whether your Dragon is walking through our doors for the very first time or beginning their final year at Daniels Run, we cannot wait to welcome them!.
A Little About Me
For those who are new to Daniels Run, and as a reintroduction to our returning families, I am Susan Mullen, and I am incredibly proud to begin my third year as principal of Daniels Run, my eleventh year as an elementary school principal, and my twenty fifth year in education. I am also a mom of five and grandmother of six, and those roles deeply influence how I lead. I want every classroom at Daniels Run to be a place where I would want my own children and grandchildren to learn, a place where every child is known and valued, feels a strong sense of belonging, experiences joy, and is challenged to grow. I grew up in Dana Point, California and will always have a love for the ocean, sandy beaches, and anything that keeps me close to the water, but Virginia is home. I feel incredibly fortunate to lead a school that benefits from both the strength and opportunities of Fairfax County Public Schools and the close connection and tremendous support of the City of Fairfax. Daniels Run is a very special community, and I am honored to be part of it.
Save the Date: Back to School Night and PTA Family Picnic
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 17. Back to School Night will take place from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., and our PTA Family Picnic will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
We look forward to welcoming families into the school to connect with teachers and learn more about the year ahead while also enjoying time together as a Daniels Run community. More information will be shared as we get closer to the event.
City of Fairfax Construction Updates
As we begin the school year, please remember that the City of Fairfax is completing roadwork on Blenheim Boulevard. Work is scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., so we do not anticipate it interfering with our regular arrival and dismissal. Families coming to school during the day for late arrivals, early dismissals, volunteering, or other visits should allow a little extra travel time.
Construction at the Willard Sherwood Community Health Center will also impact some families in the Layton Hall area. The suggested walking route takes students through Van Dyck Park and brings them to the intersection directly in front of Daniels Run, where our crossing guard can assist students in safely crossing the road. Please review the map and additional information from the City of Fairfax included below.
Ready for Our Dragons!
Families, thank you for your partnership and for the trust you place in us each day. We know that sending your children through our doors is an act of tremendous trust, and it is a responsibility we never take lightly.
Enjoy your final weekend of summer. Get those backpacks ready, set the alarms, and we will see our Dragons Monday morning!
Warm regards,
Susan Mullen, Principal

William-Sherwood Path Closed Due to Construction
Dear Families,
We wanted to make you aware of construction that began on Monday, August 3.
As part of the Willard-Sherwood Community Health Center project, the walking path between the Sherwood Center and the Police Station that connects to the Layton Hall Apartments will be closed. This construction zone is expected to remain in place for approximately three years, through Fall 2030.
The sidewalk next to the Willard Health Center along Layton Hall Drive will also be closed during this time.
Please see the attached map for alternative walking routes to and from the area. We encourage families who normally use these paths to plan a little extra travel time while this detour is in place.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as this project moves forward.

Sendero William-Sherwood Cerrado Por Obras
Estimadas familias,

Study Help and Support Available to Students in Schoology
A new Schoology Study and Support Hub is available for students in Schoology. This space was developed by the FCPS Educational Technology Team with input from students. It is designed to provide essential study tools and academic support resources directly to our learners.
Students can log in to Schoology and read their Schoology announcements or watch this video on the support hub for more information.
New Student ID Cards and Bus Navigation System
FCPS is launching a new bus navigation system, which includes student ID cards for students who ride the bus. Students will use the cards to tap on and off the bus, helping FCPS and families know exactly which students are riding which buses.
Learn more about the new system and how it will improve route efficiency, safety, and transparency with families. Check out the frequently asked questions for families.

New Student Device Requirement
Starting this school year, students may only use FCPS-issued devices for school-related digital activities during the instructional day. This is in accordance with a new School Board requirement, approved on July 16, which states that students may not use personal electronic communication or computing devices, including personal laptops, tablets, smartwatches, smartphones, and similar devices.
Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device.
Families can help support this requirement by reminding students to bring their FCPS-issued device each day and use it for all school-related digital activities unless an approved exception applies.
