How pros actually create space in their mix

Everyone thinks "deep-sounding" tracks need lots of reverb and delay.


The opposite is true.


Some of the deepest-sounding tracks have very few spatial effects, and here's why.


If every element of your mix goes to a reverb, your track will drown in a soup of undefined mud.


That's exactly why most professional producers and mix engineers approach reverb and delay differently.


Here's how I do it.


First, I define which element is going to be the star of the show.


That might be a lead sound or a vocal. Sometimes even an upper bassline.


Next, I ask myself how I want this element to be placed in the sound stage.


You might have heard of the mix box concept.


It's the idea that all of your elements can be placed in a 3-dimensional sound stage.


A large, lush plate reverb populates that space quickly, whereas a short, intimate reverb leaves more room for other elements.


So I carefully decide how much space I give to that element, and then I craft the reverb around that strategy.


Yes, I dial in every parameter by hand or use presets I’ve intentionally built for certain use cases.


And I do it for every element that gets a spatial effect, because the sum of all those micro-decisions adds up to a 3D-sounding space that doesn't turn muddy.


Around 80% of the channels in my sessions get no reverb at all, so the other 20% can truly come to life.


If that sounds over-the-top and you still default to slapping on the same "phat plate" preset you always use, you're missing out big time.


Truly understanding parameters like pre-delay, early reflections, diffusion, and density is a non-negotiable.


This lets you populate your mix box with intention.


But how do you learn all of these parameters?


Here's the exercise I give my coaching members:


Take a dry-sounding drum loop.


Put a single reverb on it and set a neutral starting point:


medium decay, pre-delay at zero, diffusion and density around the middle.


Then move one parameter at a time to both extremes, and listen with a specific question in mind:

  • Pre-delay: does the source sit inside the space, or in front of it?
  • Early reflections: does the room feel close and small, or distant and large?
  • Diffusion: does the transient stay sharp, or get smeared into the tail?
  • Density: does the tail sound grainy and sparse, or thick and continuous?


A few minutes of this will teach you more than ten tutorials, because you're building a reference point in your own ears instead of borrowing someone else's description of what a knob does.


That's the actual skill here.


Not memorizing what the parameters mean, but recognizing what they sound like the moment you hear them.


Do that once, and the next time your track feels flat, you'll know exactly which control to reach for instead of scrolling through presets hoping one of them fits.
