European Court of Human Rights, Switzerland: Lack of Access to a Fully Vegan Diet While in State Care Violated Applicants’ Ethical Beliefs

On July 16, 2026, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) held, in a 6–1 vote, that the failure of the Swiss authorities to provide two individuals with entirely vegan diets while they were in pretrial detention and a psychiatric hospital, respectively, violated their freedom of thought and conscience as protected by article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Furthermore, the court found that no effective remedy had been available to the applicants, as it was practically impossible to obtain an administrative decision regarding their complaints for review in the national courts, which violated article 13 of the ECHR.Facts of the CaseThe applicants before the court are two Swiss nationals....
