At some point, the software told me to reboot the phone.
At the exact same moment, the phone showed a warning that basically said: do not reboot this phone or you may brick it.
I had a computer telling me to press the button and a phone telling me it might die if I did. I waited for more than an hour. Nothing changed. Neither device seemed interested in taking responsibility.

Krzychu, this happened back in the iPhone 3 days, when I was testing a really good Samsung Android phone. I do not remember the exact model. I do remember downloading Samsung’s official Windows updater to get the latest firmware. I think its name started with a K.
The phone itself was great. The update experience was not.
Eventually I rebooted it anyway. Thankfully, the phone survived. I do not think the firmware update did. I was left with a working phone and absolutely no confidence about what had just happened.

That small moment pushed me toward the Apple ecosystem. Good or bad, I stayed there. I still use Apple. I still like it a little more.
But I also like Android. A lot has changed since those days. Android is much more mature now, and I am glad it exists. Real competition is good for all of us, no matter which camp we choose.
That is why I am happy about this Android change, even if Google is making it because the EU requires it.

Google has to open a better Android wake-word path to third-party assistants. For Home Assistant, that matters because the current Android wake-word setup can work, but it can keep the main processor listening, use more battery, show the microphone indicator, and require Home Assistant to be the default assistant.
A better low-power path could make “Hey Nabu” much less awkward on newer phones. Google still has to build the access. Home Assistant still has to use it. Most of the main access is due with Android 18 in 2027. Two assistants listening at the same time is the later 2028 part. This is not a magic update arriving tonight.

I made a short video that puts the useful parts, the limits, and the dates in the right order:
If you want to help the channel, watch the video until the end. If Android wake words are not your thing, skip it completely. I will not know. I am still not sure whether that old Samsung finished its update.

P.S. This one needed a meme.
