Not to be confused with the other recent story about an AI company that bought massive quantities of books to scan and destroy in order to improve their AI model, tech outlet 404 Media just uncovered that Amazon is also purchasing, scanning, and literally tearing apart huge quantities of books. They’re doing this to use the books’ contents as AI training data.
It’s a metaphor too obvious for fiction. Amazon, which already hurts the publishing industry in countless ways, is now physically destroying a massive number of books in order to build something that further degrades human communication.
