After months of planning, Vanity Fair’s Style Issue has finally arrived, with Marc Jacobs gracing its cover. In a sweeping and candid interview with VF style correspondent José Criales-Unzueta, the American fashion designer proves exactly why he’s the king of reinvention. From the depths of scandal to the heights of success, Jacobs doesn’t shy away from any subject, addressing it all with his signature sense of humor and, of course, style. Sure, he’s known for his collections, bags, and fragrances, and even his fabulous nails, but read on and you’ll get an exclusive look at what’s next after the LVMH sale of his label. And I’d be remiss to not point you in the direction of the literal (and striking) portrait of Jacobs, wearing Chanel no less, painted by the incomparable Anna Weyant, which serves as the cover of this issue.

After you’ve taken a walk down Marc lane, venture over to Hollywood for an exclusive first look at Zoe Kazan’s upcoming Netflix series, East of Eden, starring Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, and Mike Faist. While you’re there, be sure to also check out VF’s Chris Murphy in conversation with John Early, the comedian behind the internet’s favorite cult film this year, Maddie’s Secret. And as a personal recommendation from me, who saw this film in a crowded theater on a Wednesday afternoon, go watch Maddie’s Secret. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Happy reading and watching!

The King of Reinvention

“All I’ve ever been is a fashion victim,” Marc Jacobs declares. He’s sitting in the showroom of his office in SoHo, on the other side of a long glass table. Behind him, on shelves and tables across the glossy black floors, is his commercial collection: the wallets, leather accessories, the new Scene handbags in pastels and bright colors.

“I don’t think of that as a bad thing,” he clarifies.

In his four decades in fashion, Jacobs has weathered personal storms and professional crises, coming back stronger each time. In a revealing interview, the great American designer holds forth on his LVMH sale, past scandals, and exactly—or maybe not so exactly—what his next chapter will mean for his runway collections.
