Thermal Properties of Aluminum Core PCBs
Aluminum-core PCBs occupy the practical middle ground in the PCB materials spectrum, offering a major thermal performance upgrade over standard FR-4 at a moderate increase in cost. These metal-core boards consist of three layers: a copper circuit layer on top, a thermally conductive dielectric layer in the middle, and a solid aluminum base at the bottom.
The aluminum base dramatically improves heat dissipation compared to FR-4. The dielectric layer typically achieves thermal conductivity of 1 to 3 W/mK, while the aluminum substrate itself conducts heat very efficiently, far exceeding FR-4's 0.3 to 0.4 W/mK rating. Heat generated by components quickly transfers away from the circuitry and spreads across the metal base, reducing hotspots and extending component life.
Aluminum PCBs are widely used in LED lighting, automotive electronics, motor drives, and power supply units, all applications where thermal performance directly affects reliability. The boards also provide good mechanical stability and vibration resistance, making them attractive for harsh-environment deployments. The main design constraint is routing complexity: aluminum PCBs are generally limited to single-layer or simple multilayer configurations, which may restrict their use in designs demanding complex signal routing or high pin counts.
