| TOP OF THE AGENDA | | 'All hell broke loose,' witness tells court of Tupac shooting as murder trial begins | | | | | The case against Davis over the shooting of Shakur is expected to last about a month. Credit: Getty Images | | The prosecution and defence have outlined their arguments, and the first witnesses have appeared in the case of the only person ever charged in connection with the drive-by shooting and death of Tupac Shakur. Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former leader of LA's South Side Compton Crips gang, is charged with one count of murder with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors allege that although Davis didn't fire the gun, he was the ringleader of the group who carried out the shooting after Shakur was involved in a fight with his nephew. Davis denies this. His defence team says there is no evidence he orchestrated the murder and alleges issues with the police investigation. Here's everything you need to know about the case, as it gets underway. | | | | | | | | |

| | | Why Ghana is leading demands for slavery reparations | | | In June, Ghana's international summit on slavery reparations held a re-enactment. Credit: Ernest Ankomah/Getty Images | | This year has seen a dramatic change in tone in the global conversation about the transatlantic slave trade. The demand for formal apologies, debt relief and financial compensation from nations and institutions that benefited has become increasingly forceful, and Ghana is leading the charge. In part that is because about 10-15% of the estimated 12 million Africans who were enslaved were from what is now Ghana, and even more were shipped from its shores. | | | | | | Aleem Maqbool, religion editor | | | | | | "Ghana was the crime scene where these atrocities took place, so Ghana cannot afford to be silent on ensuring that we hold perpetrators accountable," Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says. He is calling for a system of reparatory justice that funds educational grants, venture capital for young African entrepreneurs and research into enduring health issues. Although he insists that this is not about direct financial gain for African leaders, one of the demands laid out at the recent summit on reparations talked of debt relief and debt cancellation. Meanwhile, one of the key counter-arguments centres on the fact that some Africans were themselves complicit in the capture and sale of their fellow people. And for some traditional leaders, acknowledging the past is a vital prerequisite part of healing. | | | | | | | - £100m fund: While visiting Ghana, the Archbishop of Canterbury renewed her commitment to a controversial social impact fund.
