A Note from the Principal
Dear Daniels Run Families,
Welcome to the 2026–27 school year! We are so excited to welcome our Dragons back to Daniels Run and begin another wonderful year of learning, growing, and connecting as a community.
Our theme this year is “The Journey Begins with Me.” Throughout the year, we will encourage our students to recognize the important role they play in their own journey as learners, friends, leaders, and members of our Daniels Run community. We cannot wait to see where this year’s journey takes us!
As we prepare for the first day of school, here are a few important dates and updates.
Monday, August 17: PreK Orientation
We are excited to welcome our PreK students and families to Daniels Run! PreK Orientation will take place on Monday, August 17, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Daniels Run cafeteria. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our youngest learners and their families to become familiar with Daniels Run and get ready for an exciting year ahead.
Tuesday, August 18: Teacher Welcome Emails (First through Sixth Grade)
On Tuesday afternoon, you will receive a welcome email from your child’s teacher. We know students are always excited to learn who their teacher will be, and our teachers are equally excited to begin getting to know their new students and families!
Thursday, August 20: Kindergarten, PAC, and ECCB Orientation
Our Kindergarten, PAC, and ECCB students and families are invited to orientation on Thursday, August 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Daniels Run. We are especially excited to meet our littlest Dragons and welcome them and their families to our school community! We know beginning school is a big milestone, and we look forward to helping make the transition a happy and positive experience.
Thursday, August 20: Our Traditional Daniels Run Welcome Walk
One of our favorite Daniels Run traditions returns on Thursday! Between 12:30 and 4:00 p.m., our teachers will head out into the community to visit their students at home and personally welcome them to the new school year. These visits are a wonderful opportunity for students to see a familiar, friendly face before the first day of school and for us to begin building those important connections with our families. Because our teachers want to make sure they have an opportunity to visit each of their students, they will only be able to stay for a few minutes at each home. We look forward to seeing our Dragons and kicking off the year together!
Monday, August 24: First Day of School!
Our doors open at 8:45 a.m., and classes begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. We encourage your child to travel to school on the first day using the same mode of transportation they will typically use throughout the year. We will have plenty of staff members outside and throughout the building to welcome our Dragons, help them find their classrooms, and make sure everyone gets where they need to go.
Save the Date: Back to School Night and PTA Family Picnic
Please save the date for our Back to School Night and PTA Family Picnic on Thursday, September 18! Back to School Night will take place from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., and our PTA Family Picnic will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. We look forward to welcoming families into the school to connect with teachers and learn more about the year ahead, followed by time to relax, visit with friends, and enjoy our Daniels Run community. More details will be coming soon!
City of Fairfax Construction Updates
The City of Fairfax has begun roadwork on Blenheim Boulevard that is expected to continue throughout the school year. Construction is scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., so we do not anticipate an impact on our regular arrival and dismissal times. However, if you are dropping off a student late, picking up early, volunteering, or visiting the school during the day, please allow a little extra time for your commute.
Construction at the Willard-Sherwood Community Health Center will also impact some of our families who live in the Layton Hall area. A new suggested walking route will take students through Van Dyck Park. We believe this is the safest route because it brings students out of the park at the intersection directly in front of Daniels Run, where a crossing guard is available to help students safely cross the road to school.Please see the map below and further information from the City of Fairfax.
Tours for New Daniels Run Families
We know starting at a new school can bring both excitement and a few nerves! We will offer a school tour on Friday, August 21st, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm for families who are new to Daniels Run and would like an opportunity to see the school before the year gets underway.
There is something special about the beginning of a new school year. There is excitement in seeing old friends, meeting new ones, and thinking about all the possibilities ahead. Our staff has been working hard to prepare for our students, and we are ready to fill our hallways once again with the energy, curiosity, and joy of our Dragons.

William-Sherwood Path Closed Due to Construction
Dear Families,
We wanted to make you aware of upcoming construction that will begin on Monday, August 3.
As part of the Willard-Sherwood Community Health Center project, the walking path between the Sherwood Center and the Police Station that connects to the Layton Hall Apartments will be closed. This construction zone is expected to remain in place for approximately three years, through Fall 2030.
The sidewalk next to the Willard Health Center along Layton Hall Drive will also be closed during this time.
Please see the attached map for alternative walking routes to and from the area. We encourage families who normally use these paths to plan a little extra travel time while this detour is in place.

Be First-Day Ready

Study Help and Support Available to Students in Schoology
A new Schoology Study and Support Hub is available for students in Schoology. This space was developed by the FCPS Educational Technology Team with input from students. It is designed to provide essential study tools and academic support resources directly to our learners.
Students can log in to Schoology and read their Schoology announcements or watch this video on the support hub for more information.
New Student ID Cards and Bus Navigation System
FCPS is launching a new bus navigation system, which includes student ID cards for students who ride the bus. Students will use the cards to tap on and off the bus, helping FCPS and families know exactly which students are riding which buses.

New Student Device Requirement
Starting this school year, students may only use FCPS-issued devices for school-related digital activities during the instructional day. This is in accordance with a new School Board requirement, approved on July 16, which states that students may not use personal electronic communication or computing devices, including personal laptops, tablets, smartwatches, smartphones, and similar devices.
Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device.
Families can help support this requirement by reminding students to bring their FCPS-issued device each day and use it for all school-related digital activities unless an approved exception applies.

The FCPS Family Academy is where families can learn and get support for their child’s school journey.
We know that parents and caregivers are critically important in their child’s education. The Family Academy lists classes, webinars, workshops, and programs offered by FCPS to help you support your child's needs and learning at home. The Family Academy also includes information about resources available to help every family ensure their child has what they need to succeed.
