On July 16, 2026, the Fairfax County School Board directed the Superintendent to amend all device regulations, including Regulation 2601, the Students Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R).
During the instructional day, students may not use personal electronic communication or computing devices. Personal devices include, but are not limited to:
- Personal laptops
- Personal tablets
- Smartphones
- Smartwatches
- Other personal electronic communication or devices
The requirement does not apply when a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), or Section 504, outlines device requirements.
The updated Students Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) includes new Universal Grade Matrices outlining behavior expectations and responses for grades K-3 and 4-8. You can find it at https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/leadership/district-performance-transparency/policies-regulations-notices/student-rights.
A new ParentVUE mobile app is available in the Apple and Google app stores. This version provides caregivers with a more secure sign-in. The current “classic” app can be used through this Fall, however families must download the new app by December 2026 to ensure they have continued mobile access to their child’s school data.
In the new app, families can enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) for FCPS Single Sign-On. While enrollment is optional, we strongly recommend that everyone enable this feature.
Learn more about installing the new ParentVUE app. Families needing assistance can submit a Support Request.
If you are new to ParentVue, you are encouraged to review the ParentVUE Account Overview to learn how to get started.

With just over one week until the school year starts, now is the time to getting back on a school schedule! Research from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine highlights that school-aged children need at least 9 hours of sleep per night, emphasizing that sleep consistency is critical for attention, mood regulation, and academic success. Abruptly shifting sleep schedules on the first day of school can leave children feeling tired or anxious. Shifting bedtimes and wake-up times back by just 15 minutes every few days allows the internal body clock to adjust naturally, ensuring children can arrive well-rested and ready to learn.
You can help your child by starting now the process of:
- Setting an earlier bedtime, allowing time for your child's body to complete evening routines such as showering, brushing teeth, and a calming activity (such as reading or listening to calming music).
- Building a calm, predictable bedtime routine, including setting a routine for turning of screen time, changing clothing/brushing teeth, and a calm down activity to prepare the body for a full night's rest. You may also choose to lay out clothes or check backpacks to simplify the morning routines.
- Transitioning to an earlier wake up time, allowing time for your child to fully wake up and complete morning routines in order to arrive at the bus stop or school on time.
- Building a calm, predictable morning routine, which can include how they will be woken up (alarm clock or family member), when to get out of bed (time to snooze?), time for getting dressed, and brushing teeth before heading out the door to arrive at the bus stop or school on time.
For a stress-free start, consider a "dress rehearsal" a few days before school begins. Practice the full morning timeline—waking up, getting ready, and even making the trip to school between 9:00-9:15 a.m. By prioritizing sleep and fine-tuning the schoolyear rhythm early, you can give your child the gift of a calm, strong start to the new academic year.
