South Tampa-based Dairy Joy has been serving old-fashioned ice cream for almost 70 years, and it just purchased the iconic Campbell’s Dairyland in Brandon at 200 S. Parsons Ave. That’s over 100 years of combined whole-milk-goodness tradition.
“Our commitment is simple: to preserve everything people have loved about Campbell’s while bringing the same quality, service, and family-friendly experience you’ve come to expect from our Dairy Joy locations,” a post on Dairy Joy’s social media pages said Monday.
Dairy Joy is known for its chocolate and vanilla soft serve, sundaes, ice cream, milkshakes and hot dogs. Campbell’s serves dogs, sandwiches, burgers, sundaes, ice cream and Dole Whip. To be honest, I haven’t been to either one, but any place that serves ice cream and hot dogs is legit in my book.
In Tampa’s South Seminole Heights neighborhood, Kebab Masters, a Turkish-style halal shop, officially lit up its grill at 110 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The grilled chicken wings are featured prominently. Expect minced lamb kebab, kokorec (lamb or goat intestines wrapped around well-seasoned offal) and grilled liver.
Hokkaido Ramen House opened Wednesday. It’s located in the former Kyoto Ramen space in Tampa’s Carrollwood enclave at 11417 N. Dale Mabry Highway.
Highlights include agedashi soft tofu, lightly fried and served with soy sauce; spicy tantanmen ramen with chicken broth and a sesame and ginger base, chopped pork and bok choy (the dish is a Japanese riff on Sichuan’s dan dan noodles); and unagi don, a rice bowl with sliced eel over sushi rice.
And today Smokin’ Oak Wood-Fired Pizza & Taproom launched its second Tampa Bay location in Lithia at 5607 Circa Fishhawk Blvd. The fast-casual spot hosts a self-pour taproom with draft beer, wine and cocktails.
