Call it a savvy effort at political damage control or a sincere desire to ensure the integrity of the ballot. Either way, we now have the odd spectacle of a Democratic governor suddenly opening the door to requiring proof of identification at the polls even as Democrats in Washington maintain a goal-line stand against the idea. A voting-registration irregularity that may be more consequential than initially reported could be forcing a change in the debate. Mikie Sherrill said she would support a voter ID law if one reached her desk. The issue has been in the spotlight since Sherrill announced last month that a software error placed thousands of people on the state’s voter rolls even after they indicated they were not U.S. citizens.
