Ouray County officials ordered evacuations near the Gold Mountain burn scar on Wednesday evening as flash floods hit the area, closing U.S. 550 in both directions.

A West Metro Fire Rescue firefighter is in critical condition after falling 50 feet during a technical training exercise in a steep, rocky area near Morrison, agency officials said Wednesday afternoon.
