Fish Biologist

Summary

This quantitative scientist position will focus on the validation of Modular Ocean Model version 6 model output with fisheries-relevant data sets and the production of indicator hindcasts and forecasts for incorporation into NOAA Fisheries modeling enterprise and decision support products. They will work with internal and external partners to identify the observational data sets most suitable for validating MOM-6 physical and biogeochemical forecasts for use in fisheries applications. They will then conduct the validation against these data sets and develop the methodology to quantify model skill and determine its applicability to a variety of fisheries applications. The variables found suitable for fisheries applications in a region will be processed to produce hindcast and forecast products of these variables for use in fisheries models and decision support products.

Summary

This quantitative scientist position will focus on developing forecasts and associated products for physical and biogeochemical Modular Ocean Model version 6 predictions in key locations for key fisheries-related variables. They will work closely with the other environmental modelers to understand which variables are validated and skill-tested for use in fisheries applications and develop forecast and hindcast products for those variables for use in fisheries modeling and decision-support products. This position will develop forecast products for fisheries managers and the fishing community to communicate predicted changes in the environment and uncertainty in those predictions on monthly to decadal time scales. These forecast products will be delivered with every quarterly forecast. Thus, the incumbent should be familiar with automation workflows and open science principles to make these products quicker to produce. They will work closely with NOAA Office of Atmospheric Research partners producing the model and associated data portal. 

Northwest and Southwest Fisheries Science Center

Summary

This quantitative scientist position will provide technical expertise and support on how changing ocean conditions affect marine species and ecosystems. They will work with internal and external partners to integrate environmental data streams (e.g., oceanographic observations, remote sensing, and model outputs) to evaluate ecosystem variability, climate impacts, and other dynamics relevant to marine resource management, and develop and implement national and regional-scale programs focused on these issues in relation to a variety of forcing factors. Expertise will include spatial modeling, ecosystem and/or food web modeling, risk assessment, fisheries ecology, and/or management strategy evaluation, especially related to oceanographic drivers. The position will influence science and inform decision-making by communicating research findings through lead- and co-authored peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, data products, visualizations, software tools, and presentations to technical and management audiences. 

Southeast Fisheries Science Center

Summary

This quantitative scientist position will provide technical expertise and support to understand and model physical and biological processes shaping U.S. Atlantic Coast, Gulf of America, U.S. Caribbean, and Atlantic high seas fishery ecosystems. They will work independently as well as collaboratively with partners to develop, validate, and deliver modeling tools and products in support of marine resource management. The work will advance the integration of oceanographic drivers into biological models to evaluate and predict how changing oceanographic conditions affect species productivity, spatial distributions, and ecosystem dynamics. Expertise will include ecosystem/food web modeling, spatial modeling, quantitative fisheries ecology, and related fields. The candidate will develop and implement national- and regional-scale research priorities and programs to provide scientific advice in support of ecosystem-based, protected species, and fishery management. They will communicate findings through peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, data products, working groups and committees, and presentations to technical, management, and stakeholder audiences.
