Today, how — and how often — to properly clean your Brita. Plus:

Stop gunk from growing in your Brita

A good water filter pitcher is the easiest way to get filtered drinking water at home. But these pitchers are susceptible to gunk and grime, if not stored and cleaned properly. For instance, mold is prone to growing in humid places where water is stagnant and trapped, and algae (yes, really) can grow if the pitcher is left out in direct sunlight. So, first things first, make sure to keep your Brita somewhere cool and dim — like the fridge, a cabinet, or a countertop away from a window.

Plus, hand-wash your pitcher at least once a month. Here’s how→

One last thing: The best ice cube trays

Not all ice cube trays are created equal. After testing more than 40 kinds, we’ve found seven that release ice easily and don’t impart funky smells. And a few really great specialty molds, too. Think: perfectly spherical ice for cocktails and skinny cylinders for water bottles. Fun!
