Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center serves more than 160,000 Veterans at the main Houston campus and 12 outpatient clinics. Visit our website for a list of health services, programs, hours, phone numbers and more.
Due to ongoing construction on campus, parking at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center has become especially challenging for Veterans.
We want to encourage you to arrive early for your appointments and use our free valet parking service. We have a new valet contractor and are seeing some big improvements in customer service and timeliness. Even if the valet line appears to be long, it moves steadily and most cars are parked quickly. Remember, valet parking is available free of charge to Veterans with appointments, Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
To use the valet, please pull up to the main entrance and a valet attendant will provide a claim ticket and park your vehicle. When leaving the facility, Veterans provide their claim ticket to the valet desk at the main entrance and the valet will retrieve their vehicle.
If you leave the facility after 6:00 p.m., you can visit the VA Police Service substation located adjacent to the emergency room entrance to receive your vehicles keys or dial 227106 from a hospital phone for assistance.
Thank you for your patience as we work to complete several on-campus construction projects over the next few months. We recognize that parking is at a premium on campus and plans are underway to create additional Veteran parking. If you are late to an appointment because of parking challenges, please let our staff know and we will do everything we can to accommodate your needs.
Last week, Army Veteran Justin Fuz Aguayo played music for Veterans at Houston VA, which might sound pretty minor. But for a Veteran who suffers from PTSD, anxiety and agoraphobia…a fear of the outside world, it's actually a really big deal.
“There were times I’d get up the nerve to go somewhere, get there and turn right back around,” said Aguayo, remembering how something as ordinary as going to the gym could feel like too much. He’d get to the parking lot, feel the walls closing in before he’d even opened the car door, and go home.
Thanks to his partnership with Houston VA psychiatrist Dr. Gurtej Mann, Aguayo now visits the gym several days a week, performs in two bands, teaches music lessons to Veterans and is going back to school.
Air Force Veteran Zaleski Kelso was one of 28 Veterans from Houston VA who competed at the National Veterans Golden Age Games in Tampa, Florida last week, an exclusive sporting event for Veterans 55 and up. Our Veterans won a combined 77 awards, including 39 gold medals!
Kelso, who suffers from low vision due to glaucoma, won first place in free throw shot and 4th place in shuffleboard. However, the ultimate highlight was not the medals won, but the camaraderie with fellow Veterans and new friendships formed.
“The Games are a wonderful opportunity to fellowship with Veterans and support each other,” said Kelso, who served from 1976 to 1984 as a radar operator. “I have met Veterans from all over the country from California to Washington D.C. It’s been a wonderful experience.”
